Second-half goals lift USI men’s soccer to first win of season

University of Southern Indiana 2, @ University of Missouri-Rolla 1

The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team used two second-half goals to post a 2-1 win over the University of Missouri-Rolla this afternoon at the UMR Soccer Complex in Rolla, Missouri. The win is the first of the regular season for the Screaming Eagles, whom lost their season opener this past Wednesday.

After trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Eagles got their first goal of the season when junior midfielder John Havill (Washington, Indiana) got a shot from 20 yards out into the corner of the net. The goal, which came at the 68:41-mark, was unassisted.

Sophomore forward Matt Settles (Evansville, Indiana) used a pass from senior forward Ed Pieper (St. Louis, Missouri) to score USI's second goal of the day. Settles' shot, which came at the 77:44-mark from in front of the net, gave the Eagles the lead and the win.

USI, which was without starter's Brian Peroutka (St. Louis, Missouri) and Jared Anslinger (Evansville, Indiana), survived 21 UMR shots. Junior goalkeeper Chris Davis (Evansville, Indiana) recorded 11 saves while giving up one goal.

The Eagles will return home Wednesday, September 5, as they take on Brescia University. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (following the USI women's game against Brescia) at Strassweg Field.
