The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team breezed past the University of Indianapolis, 3-0, in its regular season finale this afternoon at the Ruth Lilly Center in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Screaming Eagles finished the regular season with a 20-9 overall record and an 11-4 Great Lakes Valley Conference record.
With the win, USI wraps up the third seed in the upcoming GLVC Tournament and gives it 20 wins for the second consecutive season. It is the first time since 1980-81, and the second time in team history, that the Eagles have posted back-to-back 20 win seasons.
Junior outside hitter
Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana) led all attackers with 18 kills while tallying a team-high 12 digs. Senior middle blocker
Leah Mercer (Evansville, Indiana) and freshman middle blocker
Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana) each added 13 kills.
Sophomore setter
Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) set the table for an Eagle squad that tallied a .336 attacking percentage. Boehmer recorded a match-high 47 assists in the win.
USI will open the GLVC Tournament against Indianapolis, Thursday, November 8. The match is scheduled for 11 a.m. (cst) on the campus of Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights, Kentucky. NKU, which won the GLVC regular season title, enters the match as the number one seed while Indianapolis enters as the sixth seed.
