The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team had its Great Lake Valley Conference championship hopes come to a halt this afternoon in the GLVC Tournament championship match in Highland Heights, Kentucky. The Screaming Eagles lost to Northern Kentucky University, 0-3, marking the second consecutive season the Eagles have lost to the Norse in the championship match.

Junior outside hitter Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana) led the Eagles with 13 kills while freshman middle blocker Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana) followed with 10 kills and a team-high .350 attacking percentage. Sophomore setter Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) was limited to 33 assists while the Eagles where held to a .163 team-attacking percentage.

Senior middle blocker Leah Mercer (Evansville, Indiana) recorded eight kills and six digs in what could have been her final match.

The Eagles, who have a record of 22-10 on the season, will have to await the selection of the NCAA II Tournament field. USI entered this weekend's tournament ranked six in the Great Lakes Region, but an automatic bid from the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference could hinder USI's chances of being selected to the field.

If today's match was USI's last of the season, it would close another great year for an Eagle squad that had struggled in years past. The Eagles set school records for kills in a season (1,831) service aces in a season (266) and tied the school record for attacking percentage (.267) in a season. In addition, the Eagles posted 20 wins for the second-consecutive season, marking the second time in school history, and the first since 1980-81, that the Eagles have posted back-to-back 20 win seasons.
