The University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team suffered a 90-84 loss at the hands of Pella Windows (Iowa) in its final exhibition game this evening at the Physical Activities Center in Evansville, Indiana. The Screaming Eagles finish their preseason schedule with a 1-1 record.
Sophomore forwardÂ
Billy Harris (Carbondale, Illinois) led an Eagle squad that had five players record double-digit point totals. Harris finished with 18 points and went nine-for-nine from the floor coming off the bench.
Senior centerÂ
Ronnie Griffin (Layton, Indiana) followed Harris with 15 points while Evansville nativeÂ
David Ragland (Harrison) dished in 13 points. Junior forwardÂ
Diond're Givens (Mt. Vernon) went five-for-five from the floor and tapped in with 11 points while senior forwardÂ
Marlowe Currie (St. Louis, Illinois) added 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
The Eagles got off to a slow start as they fell behind by nine early on. However, a 15-6 run put the Eagles within two of the Pella Windows.
After facing a 43-38 halftime deficit, the Eagles opened the second stanza with a 12-4 run that put them ahead 51-47 with just over 14 minutes to play. USI raised the lead to six with 10 minutes remaining, but an 11-5 Pella Windows run knotted the game at 68 a piece.
Pella Windows used the momentum to put together a 10-2 run, giving it a 78-70 lead with 3:33 to play in the game. USI could not chip away at the lead as it fell 90-84.
Pella Windows was led by guard Ryan Sears and forward Kevin Sams. Sears led all scorers with 24 points while Sams dished in 19 points in the winning effort. Anotiony Hardin tapped in with 18 points while William Mayfield recorded a game-high 12 rebounds.
USI will open its 2001 regular season at the Disney Wide World of Sports Division II Tip-off Classic in Orlando, Florida. The Eagles will square off against Texas A&M-Commerce Friday in the first round.
